Federal Assistance Sought - Build Municipal Airport
Dr. W. 0. Finch, spokesman for members of the Baytown Airport Committee met with
the council to review past activities of the Committee. Charles Frost of Bernard
Johnson Engineers, planners for the City, presented plans for the building of a muni-
cipal airport on a long -range basis. According to Mr. Frost, the first step would be
a 4,000 foot paved landing strip which would be financed by the City of Baytown through
a bond issue. Under the Federal Aviation Agency, 50% of the cost of land and landing
strip could be financed provided an application is made by the Council. Approximately
150 acres of land would be needed for the first phase of the long -range project and
the Airport Committee reported that several sites suitable for an airport have been
located. It was recommended that the council make an application for matching funds
with the understanding that the City is under no obligation by making such application.
Also, to acquaint the citizens of Baytown that the federal agency furnishes matching
funds for building the airport and facilities provided the City grants no monopoly to
any person for franchise purposes. After some further discussion, Councilman Badgett
moved to instruct the City Manager to file an application with the Federal Aviation
Agency for aid in the development of a municipal airport for the City of Baytown.
