MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN, TEXAS

The City Council 6f the City of Baytown. Texas met in regular session on Thursday.
October 25, 1956. at 7 :00 O'clock P.M. in the Council Room of the Baytown City Hall
with the following members in attendance:

The Mayor called the meeting to order. Councilman Clayton moved to dispense with
the reading of the minutes.of the regular meeting of October 11th, and they be approved.
Councilman Swain seconded the motion. - The.roll call vote was as follows:

Purchase Motorcycle - Police Depalitment
Councilman Lusk moved to approve the purchase of a Harley-Davidson Motorcycle,
1957 Model, from the Harley - Davidson Sales Company, at a total cost of $1,024.00.
Councilman Clayton seconded the motion. The roll. call vote was as follows:

Water Line Easement - Proposed.Redeemer - Lutheran Church
W. E. Ehrhardt, a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church Building Committee,
informed the Council that the Church is in the process of obtaining a 12 -foot utility
easement to its new building site'at lobit and Danubina. The easement will be over
and across the Cooks property, a route the Council did not favor. A committee was ap-
pointed by the Mayor consisting of Councilman Swain, Clayton. Lusk, Public Works Dir-
ector Grantham and City Manager Middleton to make a survey of the area and after-care-
ful study, a report will be made to the Council, Mr. Ehrhardt was asked to work with
the Committee on the survey.
The bids on the feeding of City prisoners were opened and are tabulated as
follows:
Victory Cafe Sandwiches $0.30 Ea. Plate Lunch $0,35 Ea,
Nu Gulf Cafe Sandwiches $0.30 Ea. Plate Lunch $0.40 Ea.
Councilman Clayton moved to accept the bid of Frank Hruby, Victory Cafe, for
the feeding of prisoners placed in the City Jail, Councilman Swain seconded the
motion. The roll call vote was as follows:

Final Approval - Section 2 - Central Heights
W. E. Ehrhardt presented a plat of Section 2, Central Heights for final appro-
val. He explained that the developer, I. L. Lerner, had granted a 15' easement for a

drain ditch which touches the southerly boundary line"of the Section 2, Council-
man Lusk moved to grant final approval of the Section 2, Central Heights Subdi-
vision; the City Manager be further instructed to release a $1,500.00 Escrow
check, retaining a $500.00 check for completion of minor details in the subdivi-
sion._ Councilman Swain seconded the mo�ion.. The roll call vote was as follows:

Advertise - Sweeper and Air Compressor
Councilman Lusk moved to instruct the City Manager to prepare specifications
and advertise for a 4 -yerd street sweeper and 105 Air Compressor, Councilman Swain
seconded the motion. The roll call vote was as follows:

Appropriation - Purchase Camera
Councilman Clayton moved to approve the purchase of a Crown Graffic Camera
complete with range finder for $271.30. The camera will be used in the police
department. Councilman Lusk seconded the motion. The'Yoll call vote was as fol-

The City Manager was authorized to make the necessary appropriation for the
purchase of the camera. The caption of the Appropriation ordinance follows:

pay for traffic light fittings, fixtures, amplifiers, etc. Councilman Lusk se-

The City Manager introduced and read the following resolution.
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN
COMMEMORATING COLONEL GEORGE KEENE FOR HIS MILT TTUDE OF CIVIC
SERVICES TO THE BAYTOWN AREA. AND EXPRESSING DEEP AND SSINCERE
REGRET FOR HIS PASSING.
WHEREAS. the -`City Council of the City of Baytown, alehg�witti the citizens
of the Baytown area, are well aware of the selfless years of civic service of
Colonel George Keene; and,
WHEREAS the City Council of the City of Baytown, wishes to commemorate
and officially acknowledge these many years of public service; and
WHEREAS, a few of the tasks and accomplishments of the said Colonel George
_ Keene are as follows. to -wit:
1. He was instrumental in obtaining the present National Guard`
Armory for Baytown.
2. ' He was a City Councilman for the City of Goose Creek.
3. He was a member of the local Draft Board,
9. He was the Director of the local Civil Defense Board.
5. He was an untiring worker in the various civic clubs,of
Baytown.
6. He was a courageous soldier of World War No, 1,
NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN:
THAT the City,Council of the City of Baytown, hereby officially commemo-
rates Colonel George Keene for his loyal and devoted duty to the citizens of this
area. and-acknowledges gratefully his many accomplishments and expresses deep and
sincere regrets for his unfortunate and untimely passing.

Students to Name Street Near Bowie School
The Council discussed =the recent request of a student at James Bowie elementary
School to rename Weed Road. It had been suggested that the name be changed to Bowie
Drive, however, this name would conflict with an already designated Bowie Street.
The Council directed the City Manager to inform the principal of the school that
the students have permission from the Council to choose a name for Weed Road.
The name chosen by the students will be submitted at the November 8th meeting.

Negotiate - Maxwell Construction Company - Fire Station Bid
The Fire Station Committee and City Engineer Busch were instructed to meet
with Mr. David Maxwell relative to a compromise figure on the construction of e
proposed fire station near Eva Maud Subdivision. The original bid submitted was
in the amount of $19,854.00, which was somewhat higher than the budget allocation
for the construction. It was suggested that the Committee make an effort to have
the bid lowered by recommending that the City do some of the initial ground work,
where possible.
Rio Vista Sanitary Sewer
As per request, City Engineer Busch presented an estimate on the construction
cost for Rio Vista Sanitary Sewer in the amount of $3,762.00. This estimate in-
cluded materials, labor and equipment. Councilman Clayton moved to approve and
accept the estimate of $3,762.00; the Director of Public Works be instructed to
proceed with the improvement project at his convenience. Councilman Swain se-
conded the motion. The roll call vote was as follows:
