The Mayor called the meeting to order by stating that the special meeting was
called in order for the General Telephone Company of the Southwest to show reasons
why, if any, it wishes to postpone or delay the publishing of.a directory for
the City of Baytown until November, 1956.
Joe Ware, District Manager of the Telephone Company, opened his remarks with
the statement that he would like to explain, to the best of his ability, the
reasons why the company decided to rescale the normal customary April publishing
date of the telephone directory. He explained that theCompany is planning an
expansion program within the Baytown area which will total approximately Three
Million Dollars which will include:
1. A second telephone exchange in the Wooster
2. Dial equipment in the present Baytownoffice
tion of 4,600 lines and 4,900 terminals.
3. Underground cable installation and extended
residential areas.
4. Additional long distance equipment.
area.
to be increased by the installs-
service lines to several new
It was believed at first that a portion of the equipment would be here and
be installed by March, 1956. After this installation it would take approximately
ninety (90) days to have a directory canvassed, checked, sent to printers and placed
in the mail thus making the directory delayed until June, 1956, however, the
Company has been notified that, due to the great demand, the telephone equipment
now on order cannot be delivered until August, 1956.
After receiving notice of the hearing, Mr. Were explained that he spent two(2)
days in San Angelo, headquarters of the General Telephone Company, concerning the
new directory. Since the directory is compiled oncontract basis, the company held
a meeting with representatives of the directory company, and in view of the bad
public relations problem in Baytown over the directory, a full directory will be
canvassed, completed and delivered in June, 1956. Councilman M.L. Campbell moved
that the City Council go on record as approving the present plans of the General
Telephone Company of the Southwest to publish and distribute a telephone directory
as of June, 1956. Councilman Mears seconded the motion. The roll call vote was
