A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN, TEXAS,
SUPPORTING CHANGING THE NAME OF "NEGROHEAD LAKE" TO A NON -
DEROGATORY, NON -OFFENSIVE NAME; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO
SUBMIT COPIES OF THIS RESOLUTION TO LOCAL AND STATE OFFICIALS
FOR USE IN SUBMISSION TO THE UNITED STATES BOARD ON GEOGRAPHIC
NAMES TO RENAME THE LAKE; AND PROVIDING FOR THE EFFECTIVE DATE
THEREOF.

WHEREAS, in 1991, the State Legislature passed House Bill 1756 ("HB 1756") regarding the
elimination of certain racially offensive names given to geographical features; and
WHEREAS, HB 1756 renamed 19 Texas sites with the word "Negro" in their names; and
WHEREAS, specifically, such bill renamed "Negrohead Lake," which is located in Harris County
Precinct No. 2 on the west shore of Cedar Bayou, north of Ijams Lake and east of Tri-City Beach Road, to
"Lake Henry Doyle"; and
WHEREAS, thereafter, the State of Texas submitted an application to the United States Board on
Geographic Names to approve changing such name in conformity with HB 1756; and
WHEREAS, such change was not made; NOW THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN, TEXAS:
Section 1: That the City Council of the City of Baytown hereby supports the efforts of local
and state officials to re -urge changing the name of "Negrohead Lake" to a non -derogatory, non -offensive
name.
Section 2: That the City Clerk is hereby directed to submit copies of this resolution to local
and state officials for use in submission to the United States Board on Geographic Names to urge again
renaming the lake.
Section 3: This resolution shall take effect immediately from and after its passage by the
City Council of the City of Baytown.
INTRODUCED, READ and PASSED by the affirmative vote of the City Council of the City of
