CC Resolution No. 1097 1973
RESOLUTION NO. 1097
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN,
TEXAS, REQUESTING THAT INTERSTATE 10, EAST OF HOUSTON'S
LOOP 610 TO THE CHAMBERS COUNTY LINE, BE OFFICIALLY
NAMED THE BAYTOWN EAST FREEWAY.
WHEREAS, the City of Baytown is the second largest city in
Harris County outside of Houston and has extended its corporate
boundaries to include Interstate 10; and
WHEREAS, Baytown's growth toward Interstate 10 was spawned
by the construction and opening of the San Jacinto Mall which, in
essence, has relocated the City's major business center and with
recently annexed locations north of Interstate 10, has made this
the busiest trading area east of the San Jacinto River; and
WHEREAS, Baytown's neighboring cities (La Porte and Crosby)
have their main thoroughfares properly designated as the La Porte
Freeway (SH 225) and the Crosby Freeway (US 90) while to the west
of Houston's Loop 610 that portion of Interstate 10 is known as
the Katy Freeway, and Baytown deserves equal treatment for
balance; and
WHEREAS , the Fred Hartman Bridge over the Houston Ship
Channel (to replace the Baytown-La Porte tunnel ) is nearing
completion, and the designation of Baytown East Freeway would
appropriately identify Baytown as the anchor city for tourists
and other users to cross over from the north side going toward
Galveston; and
WHEREAS , the Baytown East Freeway designation would not
change existing addresses along what is unofficially known as the
East Freeway, would not disrupt mail distribution, and would not
call for the ordinary expenses associated with most projects'
right-of-way acquisitions , design and engineering costs or
construction monies; NOW THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN,
TEXAS:
Section 1: That this Resolution be presented to the Texas
Department of Highways and Public Transportation requesting the
portion of Interstate 10 East of Houston ' s Loop 610 to the

Freeway.
Section 2 : This resolution shall become effective from and
after its passage by the City Council of the City of Baytown.
