RESOLUTION NO. 1088
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN,
TEXAS, RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING THE EXXON COMPANY
U.S.A. BAYTOWN REFINERY FOR ITS DESIGNATION AS AN
OFFICIAL TEXAS HISTORICAL LANDMARK; CONGRATULATING IT
FOR ITS 70TH ANNIVERSARY; AND PROVIDING FOR THE
EFFECTIVE DATE THEREOF.
WHEREAS, the Humble Oil & Refining Company Baytown Refinery,
which would later become known as Exxon Company U.S.A. Baytown
Refinery, first began operating on May 11, 1920; and
WHEREAS, in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Exxon
Company U.S.A. Baytown Refinery, City Council wishes to
recognize the numerous achievements of the Refinery; and
WHEREAS, the creation of the Refinery led to the growth of
the tri- cities area and the ultimate creation of the City of
Baytown, Texas;
WHEREAS, during the 1930's, the Baytown Refinery developed
the alkylation process and put into operation the world's first
commercial alkylation plant; and
WHEREAS, the Baytown Refinery contributed heavily to the war
effort during World War II, producing more 100 octane aviation
gasoline than any other refinery, and also constructed and
operated the first commercial synthetic toulene plant in the
world which supplied nearly half of this nation's supply of
toulene during World War II; and
WHEREAS, during the following years additional improvements
and additions were made which made the Baytown Refinery's lube
processing facilities the largest in the world; and
WHEREAS, additional improvements and additions have made the
Exxon Company U.S.A. Baytown Refinery the largest refinery
in the United States; and
WHEREAS, the existence and operation of the Exxon Company
U.S.A. Baytown Refinery has contributed significantly to the
growth and development of the City of Baytown and surrounding
areas; and
WHEREAS, the Texas Historical Commission, in recognition of
the long history and significant contributions to the state made
by the Exxon Company U.S.A. Baytown Refinery has designated the
Exxon Company U.S.A. Baytown Refinery as an official Texas
Historical Landmark; NOW THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN,
TEXAS:
Section 1: That the City of Baytown hereby wishes to
recognize and commend the Exxon Company U.S.A. Baytown Refinery
for its achievements which have resulted in it being designated
an official Texas Historical Landmark.
Section 2: That the City of Baytown further extends its
congratulations to the Exxon Company U.S.A. Baytown Refinery for
its 70th anniversary, and expresses its thanks for the many
contributions made to the community by the Refinery.
Section 3: This resolution shall take effect immediately
from and after its passage by the City Council of the City of
Baytown.
INTRODUCED, READ and PASSED by the affirmative vote of the
City Council of the City of Baytown, this the 10th day of May,
1990.
