CC Resolution No. 1078 1922 RESOLUTION NO. 1078 A UNANIMOUS RESOLUTION FORMALLY THANKING CONGRESSMAN JACK FIELDS FOR HIS CONCERN AND EFFORTS TO SAVE THE TEXAS WORKS STEEL MILL AND TO RESTORE IT AS AN OPERATIONAL FACILITY. WHEREAS, the economic downturn has damaged the City of Baytown' s economic well being and growth and made the creation of new jobs a necessity for future development; and WHEREAS, the closing of USX Texas Works Steel Mill struck a devastating blow to our community; and WHEREAS, when the impending sale of the Texas Works Mill to Iraq was announced, Congressman Jack Fields stepped in to oppose the loss of the still potentially valuable community asset; and WHEREAS, thanks in large part to the efforts of Congressman Jack Fields, the sale to Iraq was prevented; and WHEREAS, Congressman Jack Fields continued to involve himself with the fate of the Texas Works Mill through letters, telephone calls, personal contacts and meetings; and WHEREAS, Buffalo Steel has announced their purchase of a portion of the steel mill facility and the creation of a potential 400 jobs to spur our recovering economy; and WHEREAS, such purchase would not have been possible without Congressman Field' s intervention to prevent the proposed sale to Iraq and his efforts to encourage USX to find a buyer who would keep the facilities in Baytown; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN, TEXAS: Section 1 : That the City Council of the City of Baytown, Texas, on behalf of itself and the citizens of Baytown, Texas, hereby officially recognizes, thanks and commends Congressman Jack Fields for his concern and efforts to restore the Texas Works Steel Mill as a valuable economic asset to the Baytown area. Section 2 : This resolution shall take effect immediately from and after its passage by the City Council of the City of Baytown. 1923 INTRODUCED, READ and PASSED by the affirmative vote of the City Council of the City of Baytown, this the 8th day of February, 1990.
