RESOLUTION NO. 908
A UNANIMOUS RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF BAYTOWN, TEXAS, FORMALLY RECOGNIZING AND
TIIANKING ALLEN CANNON FOR HIS SERVICE TO HIS COM-
MUNITY AS COUNCIL PERSON FROM DISTRICT NO. FIVE
AND AS MAYOR FROM APRIL, 1969 , THROUGH APRIL, 1985,
AND RECOGNIZING SOME OF THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS HE WAS
INSTRUMENTAL IN BRINGING ABOUT DURING HIS TENURE IN
OFFICE
WHEREAS, Allen Cannon , has served the City of Baytown
as Council person from District No. 5 for a period of twelve
(12) years , beginning April 1 , 1969, and as Mayor for a
period of two (2) years , ending April 11 , 1985 ; and
WHEREAS, Allen Cannon , during his tenure in office ,
worked toward the orderly and timely restoration of the
city after Hurricane Alicia; and
WHEREAS , Allen Cannon , during his tenure in office ,
supported the formation of Harris County Higher Education
Authority to provide a mechanism for residents of Harris
County to obtain student loans ; and
WHEREAS , Allen Cannon , during his tenure in office ,
supported adoption of the 9-1-1 concept for Harris County ;
and
WHEREAS, Allen Cannon , during his tenure in office,
supported construction of a bridge over the ship channel ;
and
WHEREAS, Allen Cannon during his tenure in office,
supported the city ' s conversion to surface water which
virtually ended subsidence ; and
WHEREAS , Allen Cannon , during his tenure in office,
actively pursued the establishment of a U. S . Navy Homeport
in Baytown, as well as a General Motors Saturn Plant ;
and
WHEREAS , Allen Cannon , during his tenure in office,
supported increased exemptions to the elderly and disabled;
and

WHEREAS, during ;Allen . Cannon' s tenure in office, the
city continued to maintain its AA rating by Moody ' s and
Standard & Poors ; and
WHEREAS, Allen Cannon, during his tenure in office,
worked for orderly and responsible growth and expansion of
the City of Baytown , balanced against the concern of pro-
viding adequate drainage, water, sewer and street improvements ;
NOW THEREFORE,
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN,
TEXAS :
Section l : That the City Council on behalf of itself and
the citizens of Baytown, hereby officially recognizes, thanks,
and commends ALLEN CANNON for his valuable service to the
city as Council person and Mayor,
INTRODUCED, READ and PASSED by the unanimous vote of the
members of the City Council of the City of Baytown on this
the llth day of April , 1985.
