RESOLUTION NO. 862
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN
REQUESTING THAT THE HOUSTON-GALVESTON AREA COUNCIL
DESIGNATE THE BAYTOWN AIRPORT AS A RELIEVER AIRPORT;
AND PROVIDING FOR THE EFFECTIVE DATE HEREOF.
WHEREAS, the Proposed Reliever Airport System Report of November 1983
identified only one airport in the northeast quadrant of the Houston area as a
candidate for designation as a relieve airport, the Baytown Airport; and
WHEREAS, the Baytown Airport serves the cities of Baytown, Highlands,
Crosby, and Mont Belvieu, and large areas in Liberty County and Chambers County,
along with the many industries in the area and along the ship channel; and
WHEREAS, there are approximately 500,000 people located within a thirty
minute drive of the Baytown Airport; and
WHEREAS, many pilots presently using Hobby Field have indicated they would
prefer using the Baytown Airport if some improvements were made; and
WHEREAS, the runway length is sufficient for use by executive turbo jets as
well as conventional aircraft; and
WHEREAS, the needed improvements will cost substantially less than building
a new airport; and
WHEREAS, the designation of Baytown Airport as a reliever airport by the
Houston-Galveston Area Council is necessary before funds for needed improvements
can be sought under the Airport and Airway Improvement Act of 1982; NOW
THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN,
TEXAS:
Section l: That the City of Baytown hereby requests that for the reasons
listed above, the Houston-Galveston Area Council designate the Baytown Airport as
a Reliever Airport and be included in the Proposed Reliever Airport System.
Section 2: Houston-Galveston Area Council is hereby requested to complete a
study of airport needs in the Baytown Area in the first quarter of 1984.
Section 3: This resolution shall take effect immediately from and after its
passage by the City Council of the City of Baytown.
