RESOLUTION NO. 630
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN,
TEXAS, URGING THE TEXAS LEGISLATURE TO PROPOSE A CON-
STITUTIONAL AMENDMENT ALLOWING CITIES TO ESTABLISH A
RESIDENTIAL HOMESTEAD TAX EXEMPTION ON A LOCAL OPTION
BASIS .
WHEREAS , Aritcle 8, Section 1 - 6 of the Texas Con-
stitution exempts $3, 000 of assessed taxable value of resi-
dential homesteads from state taxes only; and
WHEREAS , in order to provide family tax relief and to
preserve the integrity of the family, the City favors the
possible use of a residential homestead tax exemption at the
municipal level ; and
WHEREAS, City Council recognizes that the citizens need
and financial impact of such a tax exemption would vary
widely from city to city; NOW THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
BAYTOWN:
That the Texas Legislature be urged to propose an
amendment to the Texas Constitution to enable cities to
establish a residential homestead tax exemption on a local
option basis.
INTRODUCED, READ, and PASSED by the affirmative vote of
the City Council on this 13th day of July 1978.
