RESOLUTION NO. 550
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN,
TEXAS , OFFICIALLY OBJECTING TO THE POSITION OF THE U.
S . FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE CONCERNING ITS OPPOSITION
TO THE CITY OF BAYTOWN' S INTENTION TO CONSTRUCT AN
EMBANKMENT SYSTEM BRIDGE ACROSS THE GOOSE CREEK STREAM.
WHEREAS , subsidence in the Baytown area has caused the
structural failure and decline in the elevation of streets,
roads, bridges and other city facilities necessitating
extensive programs of rebuilding and repairs ; and
WHEREAS , the Market Street Bridge spanning the Goose
Creek Stream, a major East-West thoroughfare essential as an
escape route during hurricanes, tropical storms and other
natural disasters, is such a facility which now becomes
inundated during abnormally high tides; and
WHEREAS , engineering studies have been made concerning
the cost of alternate methods of constructing a bridge
spanning Goose Creek at Market Street and it has been
determined that a trestle system bridge will cost some Two
Hundred Sixty-Four Thousand ($264 , 000. 00) Dollars more than
construction of a conventional embankment system bridge ; and
WHEREAS , the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service has indicated
that it will file with the U. S . Corps of Engineers a letter
giving their reason the alleged destruction of approximately
one acre of marine life breeding grounds; and
WHEREAS , the City Council of the City of Baytown wishes
to officially object to the opposition of the U. S . Fish and
Wildlife Service to the construction of an embankment system
bridge and especially to the costly and perilous delay which
will be associated with their opposition; NOW THEREFORE, BE
IT RESOLVED:

That the City Council of the City of Baytown, Texas,
officially objects to the position of the U. S . Fish and
Wildlife Service concerning its opposition to the City of
Baytown ' s intention to construct an embankment system bridge
across the Goose Creek Stream on Market Street and urgently
reguest that the perilous and costly delay associated with
such opposition to the construction of a bridge on this
major escape route be eliminated.

the City Council on this the 14th day of October , 1976 .
