RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN SHOWING CON-
CERN WITH THE PROPOSED REDUCTION IN FEDERAL APPROPRIATIONS TO EDU-
CATION, ESPECIALLY TO LIBRARIES; AUTHORIZING AND DIRECTING THAT
THE MAYOR-AND CITY CLERK EXECUTE THIS RESOLUTION AND THAT THE
CITY MANAGER FORWARD COPIES OF SAME TO MEMBERS OF THE UNITED
i STATES SENATE AND HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

WHEREAS, convenient and Fapid access to knowledge is imperative to
r
the strength of a democratic society and the future quality of American life, and
i
WHEREAS, for the overwhelming majority, the quickest and easiest access
to the world 's best thoughtis through the public library; and
WHEREAS, nearly 25% of the $370 million cutback for Office of Education
'a activities would come out of the major programs designed to upgrade school , college
and public libraries to minimal levels of adequacy, NOW THEREFORE ,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN, TEXAS:
Section I : That the City of Baytown has a strong interest in maintaining
the library development momentum that Federal support has made possible
Section 2: That the City of Baytown is deeply concerned with the proposed
reduction in federal appropriations to education, especially relating to libraries,
and asks Congress to restore Health, Education and Welfare funds for libraries to
their 1968-69 level . _
Section 3: That the Mayor and City Clerk are hereby authorized and
directed to execute this Resolution and the City Manager is to forward copies of
same to Baytown's Legislators in the United States Senate and House of Representatives.

City Council of the City of- Baytown on this the loth day of July, A.D., 1969.
