CC Resolution No. 234 RESOLUTION NO. 234 A UNANIMOUS RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN RECOGNIZING THE MANY FINE CONTRI- BUTIONS THAT THE LATE RUFUS BERGERON MADE TO THE GREATER BAYTOWN AREA; FORMALLY NAMING A PUBLIC PARK IN HIS HONOR; AUTHORIZING AND DIRECTING THAT THIS RESOLUTION BE EXECUTED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY CLERK AND THAT A CERTIFIED COPY THEREOF BE PRESEN- TED TO MRS. BERGERON; DIRECTING THE CITY PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT TO HOLD AN APPROPRIATE DEDI- CATION CEREMONY. WHEREAS , the late Rufus Bergeron became a resident of the City of Baytown in 1923, and during the next thirty- six (36) years before his death in 1959 , made many substan- tial and valuable contributions to his community; and WHEREAS , he served as Councilman from District Two (2) on the City Council of the City of Baytown from 1949 un- til 1957; and WHEREAS, he served as a Volunteer Fireman for the City of Baytown for twenty-three (23) years; and WHEREAS, he served his employer, the Humble Oil and Refining Company, for over thirty (30) years; and WHEREAS, he made many contributions to his com- munity through his activities with various service groups, to include the Knights of Columbus , the Elks Club and the Humble Club; and WHEREAS , he served many charitable activities, not only with his talents but also with his labor, to include that as an accomplished brick layer; and WHEREAS, he was admired and respected by the entire community, and is revered and remembered for his many accom- plishments; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Baytown believes that the memory of this fine gentleman should be sustained in some appropriate way; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED UNANIMOUSLY BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN: Section 1: That the public park heretofore known as the Kentucky Street Park shall henceforth be known and is hereby named RUFUS BERGERON PARK and the City Administration is hereby authorized and directed to place thereon in a pro- minent place, a plaque attached to a durable standard bearing the name, "Rufus Bergeron Park" . Section 2 : That the Mayor and City Clerk are here- by authorized and directed to execute this resolution and the City Manager is directed to forward a certified copy thereof to Mrs . Bergeron. Section 3: That the Parks and Recreation Depart- ment is hereby directed to hold an appropriate dedication ceremony to witness this said event. INTRODUCED, READ and PASSED by the unanimous vote of the City Council of the City of Baytown this the 23rd day of January, 1969 .
