A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF BAYTOWN OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZING, COMMENDING
AND THANKING FRED HARTMAN FOR HIS MULTITUDE
OF CIVIC SERVICES TO THIS COMMUNITY ON THE EVE
OF A TESTIMONIAL DINNER IN HIS HONOR COMMEMO-
RATING HIS SERVICES; AUTHORIZING AND DIRECTING
THE MAYOR AND CITY CLERK TO EXECUTE THIS RESO-
LUTION AND DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO FOR-
WARD A CERTIFIED COPY OF SAME TO MR. FRED HARTMAN.
WHEREAS , Fred Hartman has been a vibrant member
of the Baytown Community for over thirty-seven (37) years ; and
WHEREAS, during such time, this distinguished
gentleman has contributed to his community, not only in his
capacity as the outstanding Editor and Publisher of the
Baytown Sun, but in the fields of education, religion, banking
and business . In addition to these fields of endeavor, he
has contributed greatly through his activities with various
service organizations , boards and commissions ; and
WHEREAS , his first position with the Baytown Sun
was that of Sports Editor, and his interest in sports has
caused him to continue to this day the active coverage of
sporting events; and
WHEREAS , his writings in the field of sports have
won him acclaim among his colleagues , causing him to be
elected a member of the Baseball Writers Association of America,
the highest tribute which can be paid those in the field; and
WHEREAS , for his service and contributions through
the aforementioned activities , he has been appointed or
elected to the following posts , among others : Member of the
Board of Regents , Lamar School of Technology; member of the
Texas Library and Historical Commission; president of the
Baytown Chamber of Commerce (two terms) ; president of the
Baytown Rotary Club; director of the Citizens National Bank
and Trust Company; chairman of the Houston Chapter of the
Baseball Writers Association of America; member of the Board
of Trustees of San Jacinto Methodist Hospital; and member of
the Board of Deacons of the First Presbyterian Church of
Baytown; and
WHEREAS , through his efforts as Chairman of the
Highway Committee of the Baytown Chamber of Commerce , he was
particularly instrumental in bringing about the improvement
of State Highway 146 and the construction of the Baytown-La Porte
Tunnel; and
WHEREAS, though no official designation could be
made, he has often been referred to as "Mr. Baytown, " and
deserves the accolade as much as any man who ever served
the community; and
WHEREAS, the City Council is pleased to note the
upcoming Testimonial Dinner in honor of Fred Hartman to be
given by many of the leading citizens of Baytown and the
Gulf Coast area on Monday, December 16 , 1968, in commemera-
tion of his many outstanding years of service to the commu-
nity; and
WHEREAS, the City Council wishes to pay its own
tribute to this fine gentleman for his outstanding public
service, and to formally congratulate him on the eve of his
Testimonial Dinner for his many achievements; NOW THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
BAYTOWN, TEXAS:
Section 1: That the City Council of the City of
Baytown hereby officially recognizes , commends and thanks
Fred Hartman for his unselfish service to others , and for-
mally hails his Testimonial Dinner as a fitting recognition
of his service to the community.
Section 2: That the Mayor and City Clerk are
hereby authorized and directed to execute this resolution
and the City Manager is directed to forward a certified

copy of same to Fred Hartman.
INTRODUCED, READ and PASSED by the affirmative
vote of the members of the City Council of the City of
Baytown on this 12th day of December, 1968.
