A UNANIMOUS RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF BAYTOWN RECOGNIZING THE MANY SUBSTANTIAL AND VALUABLE
CONTRIBUTIONS THAT THE LATE NELSON A. McELROY MADE TO THE
GREATER BAYTOWN AREA; FORMALLY NAMING A PUBLIC PARK IN HIS
HONOR; AUTHORIZING AND DIRECTING THAT THIS RESOLUTION BE
PROPERLY EXECUTED AND PRESENTED TO MRS. NELSON A. McELROY
AT A DEDICATION CEREMONY OF SAID PARK AND THAT A PROPER
PLAQUE AND STONE BE PLACED AT SAID PARK.
WHEREAS, the late Nelson A. McElroy became a citizen of Baytown in 1940,
afterwhich he served as an instructor in the Goose Creek School System and there-
after served as a pilot in World War II ; and
WHEREAS, he served as manager of the local Chamber of Commerce from 1946, until
•is untimely death in January, 1963; and
WHEREAS, he served under twelve Chamber of Commerce presidents and was instru-
mental in creating the Greater Baytown Chamber of Commerce; and
WHEREAS, he was a deciding factor in the institution of the Baytown Fair and the
construction of a new Chamber of Commerce building; and
WHEREAS, he worked long and diligently in promoting the completion of the Baytown-
La Porte tunnel and many thoroughfares in and near Baytown; and
WHEREAS, he was active in many civic projects and was admired and respected by the
citizenry of this area; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Baytown believes that his many accomplish-
ments and efforts should be recognized; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED UNANIMOUSLY BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN:
That the public park in Ponderosa Subdivision shall henceforth be known as and is
hereby named NELSON A. McELROY PARK and the City administration is hereby authorized
.nd directed to place thereon, in a prominent place, a plaque attached to a durable and
suitable stone bearing the name NELSON A. McELROY PARK.
That the Mayor and City Clerk are hereby authorized and directed to execute this
resolution and same shall be presented to Mrs'. Nelson A. McElroy at a dedication ceremony
for such park at 5:00 o'clock p.m. , Saturday, June 27, 1964.
