CC Resolution No. 1947 - Fire Protection Week RESOLUTION NO. 1947
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN,
TEXAS, SUPPORTING THE NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION
ASSOCIATION'S EFFORTS TO SPREAD FIRE SAFETY MESSAGES;
DECLARING THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 5-11, 2008, AS FIRE PREVENTION
WEEK; AND PROVIDING FOR THE EFFECTIVE DATE THEREOF.
WHEREAS, the City of Baytown is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all
those living in and visiting our community; and
WHEREAS, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes
are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and
WHEREAS, 79 percent of fire deaths nationwide happen in the home; and
WHEREAS, the City of Baytown recognizes the significant personal and economic toll
fire takes on its citizens; and
WHEREAS, the Baytown Fire Department is dedicated to reducing the occurrence of
home fires and home fire injuries through prevention, protection, and education; and
WHEREAS, the City of Baytown understands that safety measures can significantly cut
the risk of fire; and
WHEREAS, with a little extra caution, preventing the leading causes of home fires --
cooking, heating, electrical and smoking materials -- is within the public's power; and
WHEREAS, a fire can spread rapidly and a quick escape from the home increases the
chances of survival; and
WHEREAS, smoke alarms have been proven an effective lifesaver, having helped to cut
the home fire death rate by one half since their introduction to the general public; and
WHEREAS, working smoke alarms are essential in every household and should be
installed on every level of a home including each separate sleeping area; and
WHEREAS, the City of Baytown is joining the National Fire Protection Association
(NFPA) in reaching out to its citizens with a message of fire safety during Fire Prevention Week
2008; NOW THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN, TEXAS:
Section l: That the City Council hereby supports the National Fire Protection
Association's efforts to spread fire safety messages, including its 2008 theme of preventing home
fires,and hereby declares the week of October 5-11, 2008, as Fire Prevention Week.
Section 2: This resolution shall take effect immediately from and after its passage by the
City Council of the City of Baytown.
