RESOLUTION NO. 1790
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN, TEXAS,
SUPPORTING THE TEXAS PARKS AND WILDLIFE DEPARTMENT'S PROPOSAL
FOR THE RESTORATION AND PRESERVATION OF THE BATTLESHIP TEXAS;
AND PROVIDING FOR THE EFFECTIVE DATE THEREOF.
WHEREAS, the battleship TEXAS, commissioned on March 12, 1914, was the most powerful
weapon in the world; and
WHEREAS, the battleship TEXAS was decommissioned on April 21, 1948, and today is berthed
in San Jacinto State Park, La Porte,Texas; and
WHEREAS, the battleship TEXAS is a local source of pride, history and a tourism attraction; and
WHEREAS, the battleship TEXAS as a result of permanent docking at her present sight has led to
signs of corrosion and aging, increasing the costs of maintenance, and the battleship's hull is in need of
urgent repair; and
WHEREAS, the Dry Berthing of the battleship TEXAS will provide for an unprecedented
presentation and preservation of this last remaining dreadnaught battleship while providing a "unique
naval architectural look" warship; and
WHEREAS, the Dry Berthing of the battleship TEXAS will provide an equally unique "tourist
magnet"to the San Jacinto Battleground, the birthplace of the Texas Republic; and
WHEREAS, the Dry Berthing of the battleship TEXAS will provide a key component of Project
Stars, an innovative historic trail in Southeast Texas; and
WHEREAS, Dry Berthing is deemed the best option to present and preserve this historic national
and Texas monument; NOW THEREFORE
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN, TEXAS:
Section 1: That the City Council of the City of Baytown, Texas, hereby supports the Texas
Parks and Wildlife Department's proposal for the restoration and preservation of the battleship TEXAS.
Section 2: This resolution shall take effect immediately from and after its passage by the City
Council of the City of Baytown, Texas.
INTRODUCED, READ and PASSED by the affirmative vote of the City Council of the City of
