A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN, TEXAS,
NAMING THE CHILDREN'S NATURE DISCOVERY AREA LOCATED IN THE
BAYTOWN NATURE CENTER IN MEMORY OF BILLY BARNETT; AND
PROVIDING FOR THE EFFECTIVE DATE THEREOF.
WHEREAS, William (Billy) Barnett was a major force behind the creation and ongoing success
of the Baytown Nature Center in Baytown; and
WHEREAS, Billy Barnett served as a board member of the Friends of the Baytown Nature
Center since its creation in 2003, and served as President for the past eleven (11) years; and
WHEREAS, Billy Barnett also served on the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board for thirteen
(13) years and served as Chairman for the past two (2) years; and
WHEREAS, Billy Barnett and the Friends of the Baytown Nature Center led fund-raising
efforts for many of the park amenities at the Baytown Nature Center and initially raised over $20,000
for the construction of the first Children's Discovery Area, which was destroyed in 2008 during
Hurricane Ike; and
WHEREAS, Billy Barnett and the Friends of the Baytown Nature Center Board secured over
$35,000 in donations for the construction of the new Children's Nature Discovery Area, which was
completed in mid-2012; and
WHEREAS, Billy Barnett continuously searched for new additions to the Children's Area,
most recently a concrete frog and jumping measurement board, which Billy constructed himself; and
WHEREAS, Billy Barnett also designed and constructed several of the "recycled instruments"
installed in the Bayer Musical Garden at his own expense, including a hand -carved tongue drum, with
each piece shaped like a whale.
WHEREAS, naming the Children's Nature Discovery Area located in the Baytown Nature Center in
memory of Billy Barnett would be an appropriate gesture to honor his contributions and years of service to
the City and its citizens; NOW THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAYTOWN, TEXAS:
Section 1: That the City Council of the City of Baytown, Texas, hereby names the Children's
Nature Discovery Area located in the Baytown Nature Center as the Billy Barnett Children's Nature
Discovery Area in memory of Billy Barnett's dedication and years of service to the City and its citizens.
Section 2: This resolution shall take effect immediately from and after its passage by the City
Council of the City of Baytown.
