ORDINANCE NO. 2947
AN ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING A PRIMA FACIE SPEED LIMIT OF
20 MILES PER HOUR FOR MOTOR VEHICLES IN SCHOOL ZONES;
ESTABLISHING SCHOOL ZONES; PRESCRIBING A MAXIMUM
PENALTY OF $200.00; AND PROVIDING FOR THE PUBLICATION
AND EFFECTIVE DATE HEREOF.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
BAYTOWN:
Section 1: That the prima facie maximum speed limit
with respect to school zones during any day school is in
session is 20 miles per hour between the hours of 7:15 a.m.
and 9:15 a.m. and the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.; and
City Council declares this prima facie speed limit to be
reasonable and prudent.
Section 2: That the following locations are designated
school zones to which said prima facie maximum speed limit
shall apply, to wit:

Section 3: The Director of Planning and Traffic is
hereby authorized and directed to cause the proper signs to
be posted at the above described locations.
Section 4: It shall be unlawful for a driver of a
vehicle to disobey the instructions of the signs placed in
accordance with the provisions of this ordinance unless at
the time otherwise directed by a police officer.
Section 5: Any person who shall violate any provision
of this ordinance shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor
and upon conviction shall be punished by a fine of not less
than One and No /100 ($1.00) Dollar nor more than Two Hundred
and No /100 ($200.00) Dollars except minors who have passed
their 14th birthday but have not reached their 17th birthday
shall be punished by a fine of not more than One Hundred and
No /100 ($100.00) Dollars.

Section 6: This ordinance shall take effect from and
after ten (10) days from its passage by the City Council.
The City Clerk is hereby directed to give notice hereof by
causing the caption of this ordinance to be published in the
official newspaper of the City of Baytown at least twice
within ten (10) days after the passage of this ordinance.
INTRODUCED, READ, and PASSED by the affirmative vote of
the City Council of the City of Baytown, this the 14th day
of August 1980.
