The meeting was opened with a quorum present after which the following business was
conducted:
Discuss sign for Waterfront Development.
City Manager Monte Mercer explained that the proposed sign is thirty-nine feet tall and is
to be located along Highway 146 at the entry road to Bayland Island. The highway is 150
feet wide at that location to provide room for the Grand Parkway. The sign will be located
ten feet beyond the highway right -of -way line. The sign is fourteen feet wide. For a
single -face sign parallel to the roadway, the cost is estimated to be $17,000. To erect a V-
shaped sign would roughly double the cost. In either event, the sign will not be visible
from the Hartman Bridge. To provide better visibility, brush along the roadway can be
cleared and the sign will be lighted. Our agreement with the tenants on Bayland Island
requires us to provide the monumentation and the tenants to provide their signs.
In response to an inquiry from Council Member Renteria, Mercer stated that opportunities
for additional signage are being explored. Council Members Murray, Anderson, Godwin,
Renteria and Mundinger expressed support for a V- shaped sign. Council Member Renteria
supported a sign that would be visible from the Hartman Bridge and would catch
motorists' attention.
Discuss appointments.
